The 2023 VW Tiguan is a solid choice thanks to its large interior and impressive engineering history, even if its fuel economy isn't impressive.

What vehicle is the Volkswagen Tiguan 2023? What can it be compared to?

The VW Tiguan is a compact crossover SUV that can be compared to the Subaru Forester, Toyota 4Runner and Honda CR-V.

Is the Volkswagen Tiguan 2023 a good car/SUV?

The spacious, well-equipped Tiguan makes a strong case with plenty of room and value, and a friendly level of performance. We rate it 6.3 out of 10. (Read more aboutHow do we rate cars?.)

What's new in the Volkswagen Tiguan 2023?

The 2023 Tiguan is largely a carryover model after last year's update.

Offered in a single body, the 2023 Tiguan is a close relative of the smaller, cheaper and less powerful VW Tao. The clean, conservative exterior styling carries over to the interior, which includes a small third row of seats on front-wheel drive models.

Under the hood, the 184-horsepower 2.0-liter turbo-4 grunts appropriately and pairs well with the standard 8-speed automatic transmission. The Tiguan is tuned for a soft, comfortable ride in most configurations, although the R-Line versions can be a bit stiff with larger wheels.

However, combined fuel economy ratings of 25 to 26 mpg are among the lowest in the small SUV segment.

At the rear, the Tiguan has a spacious cabin with excellent space in the second row and a large trunk. Its standard dashboard features a fairly simple infotainment system with standard wired and optional wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.

A range of collision avoidance features are standard, and the Tiguan earned a Top Safety Pick+ award from the IIHS.

How much does the 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan cost?

This year, the Tiguan lineup starts at $27,885 or $29,385 with all-wheel drive.

There's too little missing from the entry-level trim, although families might like the easy-to-clean synthetic leather upholstery on the mid-range Tiguan SE for around $33,000 with all-wheel drive. This version also includes compatibility with wireless smartphones and dual-zone automatic climate control.

Where is the Volkswagen Tiguan 2023 produced?

And Puebla, Mexico.

2023 Volkswagen Tiguan

Stylization

The 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan has conservative lines that should age well.

Is the Volkswagen Tiguan a nice car?

It's not the kind of SUV that will have you camping in your garage to stare at it overnight, but the 2023 VW Tiguan has nice, conservative lines. We like its exterior well enough to upgrade it a point above average to a TCC 6.

The angular body has a wide, rather narrow grille that blends into the headlights that extend to the tips of the front wheel arches. The two-piece profile flows into a fitted back with simple, elegant branding and slightly exaggerated embellishments. The R-Line versions have sportier styling, but not necessarily better in our eyes.

Inside, the Tiguan is just as simple. Its low-rise dashboard features an 8.0-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system, and most versions have an 8.0-inch dashboard screen. (The top-end models have a 10.3-inch digital instrument cluster.) VW offers three interior tones in most trims, but none of them are particularly exciting.

Efficiency

The comfortable, composed driving of the 2023 VW Tiguan is unique.

On Volkswagen Tiguan 4WD?

VW offers 4Motion all-wheel drive on all versions of the Tiguan.

How fast is the Volkswagen Tiguan?

With a 184 hp 2.0-liter turbo-4 engine under the hood, the Tiguan sits close to the middle of the compact SUV class. This engine is smooth and works well with the 8-speed automatic transmission for quick upshifts during lazy cruising or quick downshifts on demand. However, off-road acceleration may require good pressure on the accelerator pedal.

We would also like to see paddle shifters for hilly driving, but they are not offered on the Tiguan.

We are most impressed by the driving comfort of the Tiguan. The independent suspension is tuned for plush response, especially on the 17- and 18-inch wheels on the S and SE trims. R-Line versions ride on larger 19- or 20-inch wheels, which seems to make no sense. They are stiffer, but not sportier, because none of the versions have particularly sensitive steering.

Overall, it's the ride quality of the Tiguan S and SE that gives it a point above average with a score of 6 out of 10.

2023 Volkswagen Tiguan

Comfort and quality

The 2023 VW Tiguan has a large interior that can accommodate up to seven people.

Longer than many of its rivals, the 2023 VW Tiguan makes good use of its interior space. The large trunk and spacious rear seats give it a TCC 7 rating.

Front seat riders have somewhat fixed thrones. While heated front seats are standard on all Tiguan models, it is necessary to add power adjustments for the driver on the SE trim. The second row offers 38.7 inches of all-wheel drive legroom, although the third-row seat, which is standard with front-wheel drive (and not available with all-wheel drive), steals several inches of second-row legroom. Overall, the large rear door provides good access.

The third row is best for children, but it is a novelty that may appeal to drivers with growing families. Just don't plan on cramming a few teenagers in there.

The cargo space is impressive. All-wheel drive versions are more roomy, with nearly 38 cubic feet behind the second row and a maximum of 73.4 cubic feet with the second row folded down. Front-wheel drive models are slightly less spacious due to the third row. Regardless, the Tiguan is one of the more spacious small SUVs.

The interior trim is usable across the line, but none of the models are particularly luxurious.

We're still waiting for NHTSA to run a round of crash testing, so that number has room to climb.

All models are equipped with automatic emergency braking and blind spot monitors. Optional on the S trim and standard is a package that includes adaptive cruise control, active lane control and several other driver assistance features. The option list also includes a surround view camera system.

Front visibility is excellent, but rearward visibility is typical of an SUV due to the large roof pillars.

Fuel saving

The 2023 VW Tiguan does not impress with its fuel economy.

Is the Volkswagen Tiguan good for gasoline?

It's not great. Front-wheel drive versions rate 23 mpg city, 30 highway, 26 combined, according to the EPA. With all-wheel drive, these figures drop slightly to 22/29/25 mpg, while the large wheels of the R-Line package and heavier curb weight bump up to just 21/28/24 mpg.

Most versions of the Tiguan are rated 3 on the TCC scale.

Few competitors easily exceed 30 mpg on the highway with all-wheel drive. Too bad there's no Tiguan hybrid.
