IT SEEMS like we had the last hurrah of summer, what a fantastic month we spent working in the garden.

Now it's Easter holidays and school holidays to really get ready for our winter plantings.

Looking around Bendigo right now, the fall color is just gorgeous.

This is a good time to think about what trees you would like to plant in your own garden as you can see what they will look like this time of year.

If you are unsure what kind of tree it may be, take a photo or leaf to your nursery for identification and advice on the suitability of the tree for your needs.

The preschool may not have it in stock, but they can probably get it for you or for you

it can wait until mid-winter for the bare-root season when lots of deciduous ornamental and fruit trees are planted.

Come in and order now and you will have your trees in mid-June.

While you wait, you can prepare the holes for the new plant, the soil is a bit softer now, so the preparation is much easier.

The hole should be about a meter in diameter and 50 centimeters deep and don't make it smooth and tidy, most of the soil in Bendigo is clay based so this can cause a well, the roots sitting in the water are not ideal and will kill the tree faster than anything else.

Make sure the water can drain easily, and if not, dig the hole a little deeper and plant the tree on top of the mound, this will give new roots a chance in this wonderful mix you'll be making.

Add a pile of compost, blood and bones to the dug up soil, mix well and put back into the hole until you're ready to plant in June.
